Our Story

Our founder, Dakota Billops-Breaux, was studying anthropology and ethnic studies when she began learning the ins and outs of the chocolate industry. Developing an interest in the craft, she immediately noticed a severe lack of Black and Brown representation in the industry ownership and target demographics. Why, she wondered, should craft chocolate be marketed towards affluent white consumers? Where was the chocolate company For The People?

Growing up, Dakota was taught to “be the Brown” she wanted to see in the world.

Heeding this advice, she decided to start the chocolate company she wished she worked for.

A lot of us think of craft chocolate as an elite, expensive, and bitter alternative to Hershey’s and M&M’s. We won’t lie, sometimes craft chocolate is all those things… but it doesn’t have to be! Labeling a product as “craft” or “artisan” usually just means being choosy about the ingredients in the bar and/or the way it’s produced.

At Kokobee, we minimally process organic, ethically sourced ingredients, producing nothing but the best for our friends, families, and communities who eat our chocolate.
